IELTS Classes

IELTS stands for International English Language Testing System that is required to be taken by international students and workers who wish to study or work in a country where English is the primary language of communication. The United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, the United States, and Canada are the most prevalent nations where IELTS is recognized for university applications. The four major English language competencies examined by the exam are listening, reading, speaking, and writing.

IELTS TEST TYPES:

IELTS has two types: IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training. Both tests assess your English language skills in listening, reading, writing and speaking.

  • IELTS Academic: The IELTS Academic test is suitable for those wanting to study in an English-speaking environment or university (higher education). You can also take IELTS Academic for professional registration purposes.
  • IELTS General Training: IELTS General Training is also required for migration to Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the UK. The test features everyday English language skills that you will need in social and workplace environments.

Scoring

All IELTS scores are between 0 and 9. You can also get .5 scores as well. There will be band scores for each individual skills (listening, reading, writing, speaking) and an overall band score. The overall band score is an average of all four individual skills. As per the official test website, overall test results are calculated to the nearest 0.5 or to a whole band score. The score is pushed to the nearest whole band or half a band depending on the proximity.

Exam Format

The test is divided into 4 modules: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking.

Listening

  • There is only one listening test for IELTS candidates. This means both AC and GT students will take the same test and will be scored on the same points rubric.
  • The test will last for 40 minutes. The IELTS listening recording will last for 30 minutes.
  • There are four parts to the listening test:
    • A conversation between two people: social context.
    • A speech or talk with just one person: social context.
    • Conversation between two to four individuals: educational or training context.
    • A talk by one person on an academic subject.
  • In case of the paper-based students, you will be provided 10 minutes to transfer your answers to the answer sheet whereas, the computer-based students will only receive 2 minutes to finalize their answers.
  • The reading test will be different for both the AC and GT students.
  • The test will last for 60 minutes and there is no additional time provided to transfer the answers to the answer sheet.
  • The texts mentioned in the Academic Reading Test can be more challenging as compared to those mentioned in the General Training Test.
  • AC reading format:
    • These texts are excerpts borrowed from either books, magazines or newspapers. These are usually around topics of general interest, and so you need not be specialist to answer them. These excerpts can range from being factual and descriptive to analytical and discursive. They may also have non-verbal elements like graphs, diagrams or illustrations. If in case, there are jargons or technical terms used, a glossary will be provided.
  • GT reading format:
    • Section 1: Two or three factual texts (short), one of which may be composite (consisting of 6-8 short texts related by topic, e.g., hotel advertisements). Topics are relevant to everyday life in an English-speaking country.
    • Section 2: Two factual texts (short) that focus on work-related issues (e.g., company policies, applying for jobs, salary, workplace facilities, or staff development and training).
    • Section 3: Contains a slightly more complex and longer text on a generic topic. It will be passage taken from real notices, company handbooks, advertisements, books,official documents, magazines or newspapers.
  • The test will last for 60 minutes and the test takers are supposed to finish two task in this time frame.
  • AC Writing:
    • In Task 1, you will be shown a visual representation of information; a graph, table, chart or diagram, and you are asked to summarise, describe or explain the information you see. Make sure you organise your response into three main parts, the introduction, an overview and the main features supported by figures from the diagram.
    • In Task 2, you will be presented with a point of view, argument, or problem. The topics can range from the environment to immigration, culture, and even technology. You might be asked to, agree or disagree with a point of view or argument, discuss two opposing views, write about the advantages or disadvantages of a topic, or explain a given problem, or the cause of a problem and offer a solution. Your response for Academic Writing Task 2 will need to be in an essay format.
  • GT Writing:
    • In Writing Task 1, you will be given a situation where you will need to write a letter to request information or explain the situation. You might be asked to write a letter to suggest how to improve facilities at a library. Examiners will look at your ability to provide general and factual information in relation to the task, express needs, wants, likes and dislikes, as well as opinions, views and complaints.
    • Writing Task 2 is a little different. You will be asked to write an essay in response to a point of view, argument or problem. You will be assessed on whether you can provide general factual information, outline a problem, present a solution, justify an opinion or evaluate and challenge ideas, evidence or an argument.
  • The Speaking test is the same for both IELTS AC and IELTS GT tests. In the Speaking test, you will have a discussion with a certified examiner. It will be interactive and as close to a real-life situation as a test can get.
  • The test will last somewhere between 11 to 14 minutes and the examiner will control the timing and length of your answers.
  • A loose structure of the test can be determined as follows:
    • ID check and greetings between the examiner and test taker
    • Part 01: Introductory question and answer for 4 to 5 minutes
    • Part 02: Que card last for 3 minutes
      • One minute to prepare the speech and 2 minutes to present the speech
      • You will have pen and paper to make notes
    • Part 03: Discussion or long turn questions
      • Time taken – 4 to 5 minutes

Score Validity

The IELTS score validity for General and Academic is two years across the globe.

Exam Fees

In India, both IELTS academic exam fee and IELTS general exam fee have the same prices, which is ₹15,500.
